Many homeowners these days get quite enthusiastic about home painting projects; after all, the chance to boost your home’s curbside appeal while also showing off your stylistic flair is quite enticing! That said, you don’t want to be too eager; certain times of year are better for exterior painting, and rather than rushing the process, it’s best to be sure that your paint has the best chance of success from the moment it’s applied. Continue reading to learn a little more about when you should consider repainting your home’s exterior, as things like temperature, humidity, and weather in general can all have an impact.

Is There a Definitive Best Time of Year to Paint?

Many professionals agree that the best time of year to paint your home’s exterior is typically the summer – though you’ll want to keep in mind that “summer” can mean pretty different weather, depending on where you’re from. North Texas summers tend to be hot and humid, so you’ll want to make sure you’re picking a dry day with no rain in the forecast. However, they’re also long, meaning you might end up with a generous multi-month window when painting is ideal.

In addition to dry conditions, consider the temperature – the optimal temperature range is between 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit; as far as humidity is concerned, 40% to 70% is preferred. Too much wind or sunlight can also impact how the paint dries, so aim for mild conditions all around.

Early fall also tends to be a good time to paint your home since the day and night temperatures are still fairly consistent – but once you start to see your breath during the evenings and early in the morning, you may want to think twice.

When Should I Avoid Painting My Home’s Exterior?

Put simply, outside of late spring, summer, and early fall, it’s best to hold off on exterior painting. The late autumn, wintery, and early spring seasons tend to be filled with fluctuating temperatures, inclement weather and storms, and lots of rainfall, as well as tons of holidays that might also impact the painting process. As much as you might want to paint during the holiday season while you have time off, you really shouldn’t; if the weather impacts the paint, it’ll only lead to you needing to repaint again much sooner in the future!

Lastly, don’t hesitate to consult with professionals for insight as to when the best time is for painting your home; they’re certain to know best based on your local area’s weather, not to mention that they can also guarantee a job well done!
